The Problem

The Growing Problem of
Space Debris

Space is becoming increasingly congested, with over 170 million pieces of debris orbiting Earth. These fragments, ranging from small paint chips to decommissioned satellites, pose significant risks to active satellites, space stations, and future space missions.

The Overlooked Threat of
Micro Debris

While large debris is tracked and managed, micro debris (<5 cm) remains an under addressed challenge:

• Small but Dangerous: Traveling at speeds of up to 28,000 km/h, even a 1 mm paint chip can penetrate spacecraft shields.

• Difficult to Track: Current tracking systems are underdeveloped in terms of monitoring debris smaller than 5 cm, leaving space infrastructure vulnerable.

• Rising Density: The amount of micro debris is increasing due to satellite collisions, rocket stage fragmentations, and paint flaking. This growing density heightens the risk of the Kessler Effect, where cascading collisions create more debris, potentially rendering whole orbital regions unusable.
